--- title: Against the Feed date: 2026-03-08 gloss: A defense of the slow index over the infinite scroll, and of thought placed before credential. tag: Essay · Notes reading: 3 minutes filed: Notes --- [Placeholder essay for the spike. Invented prose in house voice — declaratives, no exclamation. Replace with the real piece.] ## What the feed optimizes A feed is engineered to never end, because an ending is a moment you might leave. It rewards the reflex over the argument and the recent over the true. It is very good at holding attention and very bad at deserving it. ## The index as an alternative An index is the opposite object. It is finite, ordered, and it expects you to leave. It says: here is everything, here is its shape, choose your depth and go. The reader is treated as someone with somewhere to be, which is the most respectful thing a page can assume. ## Why it belongs on a personal site A person is not a stream of updates; a person is a small set of durable commitments and a long tail of work in service of them. The index renders that. The feed renders only the last thing you did, which is rarely the truest thing about you.
